I am an artist-cum-art instructor, so passionate about art and helping the kids create art comes natural of me. An artist-in-residence program at the orphanage homes in KENYA will be another opportunity for me to nurture, empower, and harness talents and potentials of the Kenyan orphans and the less privilege kids.

Art is a veritable means of therapy; a creative engagement to numb pains, erase ugly
memories and help cope with the everyday challenges. It is also a vital skill acquisition in
empowering the youth. A week or more of engaging the kids in the Art can make a life time impact. I'm ready to collaborate with other stakeholder group to achieve this goal. Have a glance of the uploaded 2D AQUARIUM, A BEAUTIFUL SEA WORLD ON PAPER!.....This is a master piece of underwater creatures created by Kg 2 kids of KPA SQUARE, Ibadan City, Nigeria. I had the kids created visual expression of tropical fishes and their creations were later developed into a 2D Aquarium mounted afterwards on the wall of the school as mural art.

BRINGING ART TO BEMA HOME, ABUJA, NIGERIA

The Art project with Volunteer Africa at Bema Home, Abuja, Nigeria came to climax with an Art Exhibition on Friday 6^th January 2012. For me, doing this not for the money but for the passion for the Art and love I have for the kids, it was a huge accomplishment in my journey of humanitarian job to see the smile on face of these kids at the Art showing. The overall objective of the project was to provide a platform for therapy and empowerment through visual art for the kids at the orphanage home. At BEMA HOME, we achieved this far beyond our imagination; I shared a passionate moment creating Art with the kids without age boundary, turning the playtime of the younger kids into creative engagement, and proving the older kids with basic skills in art as an empowerment. The joy this brought to the kids at Bema Home and the less privileged young ones in Piwoyi community, Abuja made the sacrifice and the time worthwhile. Until now the art engagement was considered to favour the older kids, but my tenderness and patience through the creative process has ignite in the 3 year old girl the enthusiasm to create art. ART PROJECT WITH VAFRICA AT STEPHEN CENTER, ABEOKUTA

The art project at the Stephen Center has been so fulfilling and a wonderful experience with the kids this yuletide holiday. All glory be to God for the success of the art project. The kids were so excited to create art, turning their play time to artistic engagement was most rewarding experience as the kids were able to create a handful of art works within five days with three art instructors, myself, Ben and da-Costa. The exhibition was the climax of the project and turned out to be a turning point for most of the kids at the home. Here comes the last day of the art class but for the kids it should not end as it was getting more exciting for them day by day. The kids can't just have enough of the art project and they found every available space as a means of visual expression, even the chalk board. What I did with my class for the period of the project was to attend to each individual kid's need for expression and help each child to explore their unique talents and style with diverse media. I had engaged the kids with Acrylic paint, tempra pigment, and then water colour. As the class progresses new talents and skills were unfolding, the children tend to enjoy the classes the more and had a lot of fun creating art. I have a strong passion to help each individual kid harness their unique talent, creativity and innate potentials.

Each day, I work with the theme that allows self expression, creativity and team spirit. on Wednesday, the kids worked with the theme "My Happiest Moment" to help the kids keep in memory lane their best moment ever in life and eroding their anger, hatred and forgetting the past pains and hurt. The following day, it was a team work of a visual illustration of the typical Nigerian village.

For me, creating art with the kids is a selfless act and the process help to get over emotional stress, pains, hurts and lead them to the part of HEALING! Through art, emotions that are deep in the mind can rise to the surface. It was a wonderful time for me and the team to turn the holiday time of these kids into creative engagement.

MY ART AND THE KIDS

Art is a veritable means to capture and document every experience in life. I love Art and I am so passionate to share my skills and talent with the young ones… hoping my art will influence a change in the life of each kids that cross my path. In recent time the kids are taking the centre stage of my art as they grace the surface of my canvas and becoming the subjects of my drawings and paintings. I choose to put my expression on a big canvas to challenge and motivate the kids to dare and open their heart to the world of possibilities. My intent to work with the vibrant shades of colours is to capture the heart of the kids to engage in the creative process.

I crave to inspire, heal and improve the quality of life for the children in need through the creative process of art. This painting captures my experience of creating art with the kids at the last summer art class.

With this painting I hope that I can instill a little glimmer of courage in someone to reach out to the less privileged children this holiday. Compliments!

....Olusegun Adeniyi and da-Costa Adeoye just retuned from Ghana. They were in Ghana for a Summer Art and Music programme at the Village of Hope. A group of 16 creative artists put together by CAV were in village for a week to create Art with the kids in diverse means of expression ranging from Visual Art to Music, Dance and Craft. It provided the participants a chance for intellectual interaction, cultural exchange and visual expression. It was a rare opportunity for artists from different cultures and continent of the world to come together to help kids unlock their potentials.

Olusegun Adeniyi and da-Costa Adeoye the great two Nigeria ambassadors in the team, were able to connect with the children’s aspiration to create Art and they exposed them to a unique form of Art from Nigeria, ADIRE. They offered a unique artistic concepts, introduced new visual art techniques and media that stimulate the interest of kids to create differs art form. At the event in Ghana, the two represent a positive brand, creative ingenuity and abundant talents of the country, Nigeria.

The two of a kind share same passion, the love for the kids and Art. They are both artist of unequal passion for Art, to help the young ones harness their talents, and put them on a path to reach their full potentials. They build art awareness, sharpen basic art skills, and ignite the creative energy in children. They both share from the philosophy of the Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso; “Every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up”. Oluwasegun and Adeoye choose to fill the gap, to help the young ones with their God’s given talents and potentials, build their creative lives and give them form.

The above quoted texts constantly spoken by Mai; the founder of CAV was an influence and motivation on these two friends to do more with the kids at the Village of Hope. Mai kind gestures and selfless acts is an ignition for every one in the team to give their heart into the project. She is such a humanitarian with the drive to change the world. She offers with the team an art engagement for the kids which are a powerful means of expression and therapy.

Every child has some artistic ability and with the right environment and guidance they can discover and harness their inner creative genius. Their artistic abilities awaiting expression can be tapped as a therapy to help cope with crisis, and achieve mental and emotional stability.

NOSTALGIA REFLECTION - AN ARTISTIC ADVENTURE

I uploaded an album on facebook recently; my intent was to spur the viewers into a nostalgia reflections. It was named NOSTALGIA FEFLECTION. The kids in this album came to meet me during an event I attended at my local church few Sundays ago. They requested to grace my lens… I took series of pictures, and then decided to turn the pieces into black and white with an old school effect.

For me every experience is an artistic adventure. I learnt from this experience how little act of insensitivity can disconnect us from magnitude flow of creativity and mar a cherished friendship and memories. This experience launched me into another creative exploration. I can’t just have enough… These kids don’t have facebook accounts; I hope someday they will get to see these paparazzi work per excellence. You can have a feel of the album on the link below:

Children have always been my greatest source of inspiration. The Summer Art and Music programme held recently in Ghana was a huge success. It was a great opportunity for a group of creative artists to create Art with the kids in diverse means of expression ranging from Visual Art to Music, Dance and Craft. It provided the participants a chance for intellectual interaction, cultural exchange and visual expression. It was a rare opportunity for artists from different cultures and continent of the world to come together to help kids unlock their potentials.

My friend, da-Costa and I had a fulfilled moments and grace to connect with the children’s aspiration to create Art and the children experienced a unique form of Art from Nigeria. We believe that with our talent cum with our passion, zeal, and drive we can change the world. I’ve always been giving my best to the course of Art.

I am so grateful to Mai for providing me with such a platform to nurture new talents. I respect her for her great understanding of individual differences and her ability to accommodate people irrespective of their race, cultural background and social status.

OLUMO ROCK PAINTING

ART is a veritable means by which our cultural heritage and every laudable landmark can be documented.

The new package of Olumo Rock tourist centre opens opportunity for the tourists to now reach the top, the peak of the rock. I evinced that in the painting by placing four figures on the rock which could be said to represent the Egbas, Ijebus, Remo and Yewas on the peak of the rock enjoying the oasis provided by a tree on top.

This painting eludes the potential branding of Olumo Rock to global audience.

TRYING MY HAND ON GLASS ART

I first laid hand on Glass Art popularly known as Stained glass in 2006. It was my research project at my final year at the University of benin.
The beauty of it is that l work directly on the mirror glass with an embellishment of acrylic paint. You can look at your self in the mirror and as well appreciate beautiful work of art.
I plan to explore more into it at an artist-in-residency programme outside the shore of Nigeria.

My art has in the past enjoyed the appraisal of the media, both print and electronic. The first of its kind was on aiesec in Columbia, North America official web site at http://www1.eafit.edu.co/aiesec/NEWS/E10/ASP/afuera2.php in the year 2005.

Same year, I featured on the BUSINESS DAY newspaper, November 14, 2005, page 10 of the small business journal.

October 2007, myself and my friend Dacosta Adeoye featured on TAAKRA TV programme anchored by Diane Oputa (Charley boy’s wife). The programme runs on NTA 2, Channel 5 every Fridays afternoon.

In a community where attentionIs being given to some subject at the expense of other. That’s why we keep producing half baked graduates who have little or no practical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Our Education should be the one that ensures that our children have access to the best,Most –stimulating and most-rewarding activities that humankind and the world have toOffer. It should be note that Art education helps prepare students to communicate and Express their understanding in a myriad of ways: kinesthetic, visual, auditory, verbal and written modes.

Art enables young people to learn specific knowledge and skills associated with an Art form. The complexity of that engagement develops other sets of skills, and abilities, such as commitment to hard work, disciplined attention to detail, being able to imagine solutions and recognizing ways to turn failure into success.

Art education is not limited to classroom; parents should try and engaged their wards in art related activities that could help build in them technical skills and learn to be creative problem solvers. Art stimulates creativity and promotes critical thinking skills. It is wise enough to turn their play time into creative activities which would open them exploration, innovation, critical thinking and practical skill acquisition.

A WALK TO ALWAYS REMEMBER

One blessed Sunday evening I was taking a walk in a garden endowed with beautiful flowers of exquisite colours. I got to a place where flowers like roses, lilies, daffodils, hyacinths, hydrangeas and honeysuckles flourish and blossom. They reflect a true, deep, pure and everlasting love as I delightfully gazed on them closely.

I moved more closer to smell the wonderful perfume of these lovely and colourfully attractive flowers. Suddenly, from nowhere, a butterfly laid on a petal of one of these fascinating roses. I drew back a little, gazed intently, and I was utterly held captivated and enthralled by the sight of this butterfly dressed in dazzling colour combinations.

The appearance of this beautiful butterfly created a wonderful harmony and added more to the beauty of the scene I was beholding. I couldn’t accurately explain what I saw in words, it’s just too inexplicable and inexpressible. This is far beyond anyone imagination in splendour.

Moments later, the butterfly flew away. I was there standing as I watched it flies away until I couldn’t catch its glimpse anymore.

Then, I remembered my love, my dove; thought of her running back at me like a fast running river. My totality was overridden by her thought. The butterfly actually reminds me of her and the beautiful and colourful atmosphere her coming into my life had created. I said to my self;“Really, my love is this butterflyEndowed with fragrant and vibrant coloursShe is so beautiful and lovely attractiveMy soul crave for herRegardless of colour, race, culture and tradition.”

This said garden to my place of abode is just about twenty minutes walk. I left the garden exhilarated and filled with feelings for her, so deep and true.

Suddenly it started to drizzling, I ran for shelter under an apple tree, as I couldn’t afford to get wet. Under the apple tree I reached for a fruit and plucked it. I ate it and it was so delicious and sweet to my taste. I enjoyed an oasis this finest apple tree provided for me, as I was greatly comforted and refreshed.

As I was reflecting on this blissful moment I had this great evening, her thought again gradually finds entrance into me. Wishing she could be mine for ever and I could find in her a delightful oasis: a place to confide, sheltered and comfort. Not quite long the rain ceased, and I set off on my walk back home. Few steps I took I raised my head to the sky and caught a glance of a rainbow. It was so beautiful, lovely and pleasant to the sight. I saw ribbon of colours; though a rainbow has just seven colours. I saw shades of bright, brilliant, and vibrant hues.As I watched the rainbow closely, I began to critically analyze its endowment of amazing and exquisite colours. Tears started to roll down my chicks. The rain has actually washed away my tears; the butterfly gave me vibrant coloured wings to fly, and the rainbow added more colour to my life.

Then, I heard a voice calling out for me, I turned… open my eyes… ‘God!’ I screamed. I’ve been dreaming! Realization of the fact that all these wonderful moments are just surreal and I’d only been tantalized by the power of dream made me shed more tears.

Right in front of me was my brother; he was actually the one that yelled out for my name trying to alert me for supper. I’d been starving before the short nap but I lost my appetite afterwards. I’ve been satiated by feelings and emotion so pure, true and deep.

It takes and requires only a touch sometimes to hatch an egg. The magic is just that the egg must have been lying there for a very long time expecting, and awaiting incubation. And what do you see after the gentle touch is a chick coming out vibrantly alive.

I stood up and went for the window, I took a peek through the window at the sky and I saw stars, bright and sparkling. To watch closely a glowing and beautiful stars amazingly delighted me.

I began to envision so many things and appreciating wonderful works of creation. This is indeed a walk not to forget and something to cherish

ABSTRACT.

Adire is an integral part of the Egba culture in Abeokuta. Recently it has enjoyed a new trend in its production, handmade print is applied to add glow, making it a wearable art.Local fabrics are in thing in fashion today and adire is not exception, it is stunnishly making statement. Some years back, who would have thought that adire and other local fabrics could creep into our offices, campus and daily wears?

INTRODUCTION

Perhaps more than any art form, textile reflects the culture from which they come. The Adire textiles are a viable means of which the rich African Cultural heritage and ideas could be convey to other culture and outside world.
This highly developed textiles form has transcends many culture and individuals. Adire, tie and dye over the years has become a viable vacation for educated men and women who now adapt to the latest technologies to develop new designs suitable and befitting all occasions to meet international standard.
Over the years, Adire has witnessed tremendous metamorphosis. The commonly known Adire comes in yards, 5 yards or more, of which the textile designers reflect their thoughts and ideas in the patterns they make on the fabric. Today, the textile designers incorporate print of intricate design with the use of rich and vibrant hues of opaque inks. The print gives the Adire a rich elaborate effect, making it look close to a painting piece. The end product are adopted into curtains, coverings for cushion chairs, throw pillow case, table cloth and the popular one, a ready-to-wear outfits.
The fad of this wearable art from Abeokuta is fast growing and gaining popularity. It is traditional and modern, elaborate and elegant with a great feel of ethnicity.

– THE MAKING OF ADIRE (TIE & DYE)–

.Materials For Tie & Dye:

i. Fabric- all kinds of cotton cloth are suitable.

iii. Dye Chemicals- Caustic Soda, Sodium Hydrosulphite, Soda Ash, Common Salt

iv. Dye Vessels- Any vessels of enamel, Stainless, Steel and galvanized ware are suitable fo hot and cold dyes.

Making of Adire is a reflection of the textile designer’s contact with the social – cultural environment of which he exists. Adire, tie and dye is a resist process, which consists of tying, knotting, folding or sewing certain parts of the cloth in a way that when immersed in dye solution, the dye will not penetrate into the tied area of the fabric.
The production of Adire textile is done in two ways in which both are resist methods of dying a pattern on a fabric. A part of the cloth is protected before it is immersed into the dye bath. The resisting agent, such as rafia or cotton thread resists the dye so as not to penetrate into the resisted areas. This is what the Egbas called “ONIKO”. Some patterns are stitched with a needle and thread which is called “ALABERE”.
The second method is called, “ELEKO”. The method is achieved on the fabric with application of starch paste made from cassava flour. This starch resists the dye from penetrating through the cloth. The starch pastes are applied with brush or feather on the surface of the fabric or through a stencil that has been cut into a design. It will be left to dry for a while under the sun before it is immersed into a dye solution.

THE WEARABLE ART.

Materials:The materials needed in the printing of designs on the ready-to-wear outfits are printing screens, squeegee, stencil and textile inks (opaque), often time’s acrylic and poly mark are use to add finesse and pep.

The fabrics are taken to the tailor before working on it. The sown fabrics are immersed into the dye solution of the artist choice of colour. The next step after the dying is to spread it on a printing table for the printing process to commence.Afterwards, opaque ink is applied on the printing screen and placed on top of the fabric, squeegee is used to spread the ink along the surface of the screen.

CONCLUSION

The wearable art with it frills of ethnicity speaks more of our cultural heritage. Its recognition is fast spreading even beyond the shore of Nigeria. This is due to the rate at which the designers are going through the trend of latest fashion is fascinating. It could be worn on jeans, corporate trouser, skirt or what have you.
The branding and packaging of the Adire in a ready-to-wear content is a plus to its accessibility and patronage in the society, thus making it prominent.
Meanwhile, the artists are strongly advice to use good and original materials to ensure a piece that is fast and durable.
